Stand location is one of the highest-impact decisions you make before a trade show and one of the least reversible. A poor location can halve foot traffic compared to a comparable stand in a better position, regardless of design quality.
The principles of high-traffic positioning
Entrance areas and main aisles
Locations near hall entrances and along primary visitor routes generate the highest walk-past traffic. Visitors enter with energy and attention, and the first stands they encounter benefit from this. Research from German trade fair operators consistently shows that stands within 15 metres of a hall entrance or main aisle receive significantly more visitor contact than equivalent stands in secondary positions.
Intersections and crossroads
Floor plan intersections are natural visitor decision points. People slow down, look around, and consider where to go next. A well-designed stand at an intersection is visible from multiple directions and captures attention from visitors approaching from any side.
Proximity to traffic anchors
Major exhibitors, speaker stages, catering areas and restrooms are traffic anchors that generate consistent visitor flow throughout the day. A stand positioned near a well-known brand or a session stage benefits from the residual traffic these anchors attract.
Avoid dead ends and peripheral positions
Dead-end aisles and peripheral hall positions generate low traffic. If you are allocated such a position, invest in strong visual draws: large-format graphics, elevated structures or eye-catching lighting to pull visitors in from the main aisles.
Stand orientation and openings
Where your stand openings face matters as much as your position on the floor plan. Open sides facing the main traffic flow maximise natural entry. A corner stand with both open sides facing high-traffic aisles will significantly outperform a corner stand with one opening facing a wall or a low-traffic route.
Working with your allocated position
Hall plans at major trade fairs are often booked 12 to 18 months in advance. If your preferred location is taken, the best response is to design your stand specifically for the position you have secured. EXFAIR advises on stand location selection during early planning and designs your stand to maximise whatever position is available to you.
